The World and stuff
Giant skeletal Revenants with an unknown agenda and a flair for the destructive have trapped Humanity behind great walled fortress cities. Deaths from defending the walls and a declining birth rate leads to a reliance on necromantic workers to uphold society. Necromancers become more powerful, but the church and the throne keep them in step. “Technology” is developed by trapping ghosts in devices and giving them simple commands, but is limited because ghost energy is drained when ghosts are forced to occupy non living devices. More complex machines are built using dead human tissue, which is easier to possess.
Eventually they say fuck it and develop a plan to fight back. A ritual is developed to fuse a human skull and nervous system to a robot frame, while killing the host and simultaneously creating a ghost to pilot the weapon via unlimited free possession of their own magically modified corpse. Ghost pilots sacrifice themselves after arduous training to defend their fellow man.
The System
I want to use Into the Odd remastered because it has been my favorite system since I first read it way back when because it's simple and I'm simple.
I like the idea of rolling good stats and hp and getting stuck with a forestry mech, only an axe and a clamp designed for trees. Crazy mech equipment as Arcana sounds awesome too. The high lethality fits too well, once your Ghost's Braincase is destroyed you cant get a new one.
The Ghost could have a separate character sheet as well, nod to Lancer. "You can always spend a token to wail and moan and rattle chains" has a nice ring to it.
The Roadmap
I want to get this ready for Zine Month 23. I feel good about this game and I think its really cool.
